Question - Does being a good person get you to heaven?

Most of us think of ourselves as a good person, and there are many wonderful people. But how do we measure up to the Ten Commandments?

  1. You shall have no other God's before me.
Anything or anyone we place above God is another god.
  2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images.....
Are our friends, family, work, possessions or anything else more important to us than God?
  3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.....
No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won't put up with the irreverent use of his name.
  4. Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.....
  5. Honor your father and mother.....
  6. You shall not murder.
Matthew: 21/22 (Jesus speaking) ‘You shall not murder, a and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
Matthew 27 (Jesus speaking) “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ e 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
  8. You shall not steal.
    Have we ever stolen something?
  9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Have we ever told a lie?
  10. You shall not covet.....
No lusting after our neighbor's house, wife, etc....... We must not set our heart on anything that belongs to someone else.
James 2:10 For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.

We can judge ourselves by the Ten Commandments.  Have we broken any of the Ten Commandments? If we have, and God judges us based on these commandments, are we guilty or not guilty?  Heaven or Hell?
I have broken God's commandments; we all have broken God's commandments!  The good news is that He sent Jesus His Son to die on the cross for our sins.  Jesus took our punishment so that we could live.
Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
John 3:16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Key verses:
John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Galations 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law (that is being a good person), Christ died for nothing!

It is a common idea that we will go to heaven because we are a good person.  Please consider the words of the Bible and specifically the words of Jesus and put your trust in Him.  If being good gained us entrance to heaven, then why did Jesus suffer and die for our sins.  Trust in Jesus as your Saviour, the only way to heaven is through Him.  We must repent and turn from our sins and follow Him!  Talk to Him daily and read the Bible (it is one way He talks to us and it is our guide in how we should live).
A good place to start reading the Bible is the Gospel of John.
