Members of the Russian occupation forces seized Father Stepan Podolchak on February 13th. The Christian leader had been serving as the abbot of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Kalanchak, a village located within the Russian-occupied Kherson Region. Taking him away with a bag over his head, the soldiers insisted that he go with them for questioning. Two days later, Father Stepan's battered body was found on the village street. Some reports state that he had also suffered a bullet wound to the head.

Russian officials now controlling the area have refused to take any action in response to the church leader's tragic death. When Forum18 representatives contacted the local police, they were simply told to "forget about it." The occupying Russians have frequently placed pressure on priests who refuse to leave the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and join churches under the Moscow Patriarchate. As a result, some priests have been abducted or taken into captivity by the Russian forces.
(Reports on previous incidents are available here.)

For example, two priests from the Russian-occupied Donetsk Region, Father Khristofor Khrimli and Father Andri Chui, were both convicted of "conducting missionary activities" in September 2023 (learn more). As a result of their convictions, Russian officials ordered that the Christians be deported from "Russia." Since Russia now lays claim to Ukraine's Donetsk Region, the men are unable to return to their homes.

Father Khristofor and Father Andri are now caught in a situation where they are to be deported, but their destination has not yet been determined. Russian officials will send them to Latvia, if the two believers are in agreement. However, the Christian leaders have refused this option since they are Ukrainians. The men have also been offered Russian citizenships, which would allow them to return to Donetsk. Yet, wanting to retain their true citizenship as Ukrainians, they have refused this proposal as well. In the meantime, the Christian leaders are being held at a deportation centre in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.

Please uphold the members of Father Stepan Podolchak's family and church community as they mourn this tragic loss, praying that they will sense the Lord's comforting presence especially near to them.

May all our Christian brothers and sisters in this war-torn nation serve as agents of God's peace, demonstrating the love of His Son Jesus to those around them.

Pray that the Lord will also provide protection, wisdom, favour and guidance to His people – especially those residing within the occupied regions of Ukraine – as they determine how to carry on their lives and ministries in the midst of the ongoing political conflict.

At least 15 worshippers were killed when gunmen attacked a Catholic church in the village of Essakane, Burkina Faso, on February 25th. The assailants are believed to be Islamic militants who have been causing havoc throughout the country and surrounding nations.

In a statement released following the attack, the vicar of the local diocese called for prayer while denouncing "those who continue to wreak death and desolation in our country." This is only the latest atrocity to have been perpetrated by armed insurgents, who presently control almost half of Burkina Faso's territory. Over the past three years, churches have particularly been targeted in violent attacks by the country's militant Islamic groups.
For more reports addressing persecution in this West African nation, view this list.

Pray for healing on behalf of those who were wounded during this recent attack, as well as comfort for those who are mourning the loss of their loved ones.

To prevent further atrocities, may a solution be found to the ongoing conflict so that the chaos and violence being perpetrated by militant groups throughout this region of Africa will come to an end.

Ask the Lord to work mightily in and through His people as they seek to spread the message of the Gospel throughout Burkina Faso, leading many to repentance and faith in Him.

Ayatu Ram Podiyami, a believer who lives in Gufanpal, Chhattisgarh, came to faith in Christ alongside his family in 2020. On February 6th, an opposing group of about 20 people from the village approached the Christian man and asked him if he would convert back to Hinduism. After Ayatu refused to renounce his Christian faith, a larger mob began to gather outside his house, further pressuring him to return to the Hindu religion. Fearing for his safety, the harassed believer fled into the jungle.

When Ayatu returned home a few hours later, his family told him that they had been given an ultimatum: either convert to Hinduism by February 12th or face the consequences. Ayatu called the police but was informed that they could do nothing. After filing a police report, village leaders were summoned to the police station on February 9th. Unfortunately, all efforts to diffuse the volatile situation failed.

On the morning of February 12th, a community leader named Ram Singh phoned Ayatu and told him that the villagers were coming to talk to him. Soon afterwards, three people arrived at Ayatu's house and asked if he was ready to renounce his faith. When the Christian once again refused to return to Hinduism, the villagers began beating him with rods. After Ayatu had been pulled away from the attackers by his mother and brother, the assailants then turned against his father, Mahngu Ram Podiyami.

Ayatu was forced to flee once more and, to his dismay, he found his father unconscious on his return. His brother had also been beaten during the attack. All three believers were admitted to the hospital, with Mahngu suffering life-threatening injuries. At last report, the three injured family members are still recovering from the ordeal.

Following the attack, a police report was filed. However, the authorities reportedly fabricated several details surrounding the case, claiming the incident was a "family feud" and that the victims received their injuries by accident.
To review other reports on the persecution of Christians in India, go to our country report.

Pray that Ayatu and his family will fully heal from the injuries and trauma they experienced due to the attack. In the face of intense pressure from the opposing members of their community, ask God to divinely protect this targeted family and continue to sustain them with His strength, courage and peace.

May these persecuted believers be so filled with God's Spirit that they will respond to the hostility of villagers with the love of Christ in both 'word and deed' – encouraging community members to likewise submit their lives to Him.

At the same time, may the Lord's righteousness be upheld throughout India, so that the country's governing authorities would take incidents of persecution seriously and strive to hold accountable all those who wrongfully harm or harass Christians because of their faith.

DR CONGO: Church Attacks Result in Fatalities and Kidnappings

Members of the Eglise Message du Temps church are calling for "fervent prayer" after being struck by an attack on January 30th. The church is located within the community of Baeti in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The attackers have been identified as members of a militant group associated with ISIS.

According to the community's mayor, a total of eight people were killed in the attack – five of whom had gathered inside the church for worship when the invasion took place. At least 30 other congregation members were reportedly kidnapped, including the church's pastor and his wife. The couple's two children were included among those who were tragically killed.

Only two weeks prior to this incident, a bomb exploded inside a Pentecostal church in Kasindi, a town located along the border neighbouring Uganda. That attack occurred on January 14th during the believers' Sunday morning worship service. The militants claimed that 20 Christians were killed in the blast; however, at last report, the death toll stood at 14, with at least 63 people wounded. A Kenyan suspect has since been detained by the authorities.

Since 2021, a rebel group known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) has launched attacks throughout the region, resulting in a "state of siege" for the residents. While the violence centres around the group's efforts to establish an Islamic state, Christians have frequently been targeted in the conflict. Unfortunately, the terrorism of this militant group, which started in Uganda, has now spread into neighbouring DR Congo. Recent reports indicate that the rebels are particularly active in the DR Congo's Kivu province.
More information on the persecution of Christians in this war-torn nation is available here.

Please prayerfully uphold our African Christian brothers and sisters in the DR Congo as they mourn the loss of loved ones who were slain during these recent attacks. May the victims' family members and friends tangibly sense our Heavenly Father's love, peace and comforting presence with them.

Also remember the survivors who were taken captive by the rebels, praying that they will be divinely protected and released unharmed.

In the midst of the ongoing violence, may God mightily intervene in the hearts and minds of people throughout the country – including the militants of the attacks – so that lasting peace will reign in the region.

Pastors from the Foursquare Church recently gathered at their denominational campground in the Puttalam District of Sri Lanka for an annual convention. At around 1 a.m. on January 25th, a group of unidentified individuals entered the camp and began vandalizing the property.

Windows from four vehicles, including a bus and two vans, were smashed. In addition, a bottle containing gasoline was ignited and thrown into the bus. When conference attendees heard the ruckus and rushed to the scene, the perpetrators immediately fled the area. A police investigation into the incident is presently underway.

This is not the first time the property has been targeted by militants. During the construction of the camp facility, opponents threw stones at the building site and burned down the workers' huts.
To review previously posted reports addressing the violence perpetrated against our Christian brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka, go to our country report.

Pray that these pastors and their congregations will be granted wisdom, as well as the necessary provisions, as they now deal with the aftermath of the vandalism attacks.

May the same apply to other Christians in Sri Lanka who have faced similar opposition because of their faith. Ask the Lord to ensure the country's believers are kept safe and secure whenever they gather for worship and teaching, attend conventions, and/or participate in discipleship programs.

May these believers receive the practical support and spiritual encouragement they need so they can continue faithfully serving as "lights" amid the darkness around them.

PAKISTAN: Blasphemy Charges Dropped Due to False Accusations

Bhagat

A 72-year-old Christian man in Faisalabad was arrested and charged with blasphemy on February 10th after being accused of tearing a copy of the Quran. The case against Younis Bhatti (also known as Bhagat) was filed by Sosan Fatima, a woman who had previously attended the Brethren house church founded by the Bhatti family. Having allegedly converted to Islam, Sosan claimed that she was reading the Quran at her home when Younis forced his way into the house. Purportedly, he then grabbed the Islamic scriptures from her and tore its pages, assaulting her during the incident.

Further investigation into the case has revealed that the allegations against the accused man had been fabricated following a dispute over land. Younis is well known for helping Christian families that were displaced as a result of the August 2023 riots in Faisalabad (see this report). He had kindly allowed Sosan and her husband to live in a house on his land for free. A few months ago, Younis informed the couple that he wanted to accommodate another family on the property, and that he was willing to build a wall between the two residences. However, Sosan strongly opposed this plan, not wanting to share the property.

According to residents in the area, Sosan was a regular churchgoer, and her claim of becoming a Muslim was made strictly in an attempt to entrap Younis in her plot. Thankfully, her deceit has come to light. All charges against Younis have since been dropped and, in an unexpected move, the authorities have filed charges against Sosan for making false accusations.

The tensions between local Muslims and Christians had initially escalated after news of the accusations spread throughout the community. Following the horrific mass violence that took place in Faisalabad last August (which, incidentally, was also triggered by allegations of blasphemy), local Christians feared that the situation would repeat itself. However, with the truth now coming out, tensions are easing and life within the bustling city is gradually returning to normalcy.

The misuse of blasphemy charges has been prevalent in Pakistan over the years. Nasir Saeed, who serves as the director of CLAAS-UK, commended the police for the discernment they demonstrated during their investigations. He highlighted the numerous instances in which similar allegations were used for vendettas or personal gain. To learn more about the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, and/or to view podcast reports, go to our country report.

Praise God that the truth concerning this case has been revealed, and that this elderly believer was justly vindicated.

Pray for the many others presently facing false accusations, asking that their hearts be filled with courage, strength and peace. Likewise, may justice prevail in the lives of these persecuted Pakistani followers of Jesus, so they too can be rightfully vindicated.

Overall, may there be a dramatic change of attitude among the country's general populace, so that the blasphemy laws will no longer be wrongly used as a way of achieving personal gain.

Nigerian Government Keeps Christian Orphans Hostage

02/17/2024 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) –

The 16 Christian children from Du Merci Orphanage will remain in Nigerian government custody. This is the latest decision in a four-year legal battle between Du Merci Orphanage Director, Professor Solomon Tarfa, and the government of Nigeria.

Fate of children removed from Christian
orphanage in Nigeria four years ago still unknown

A judge from the Kano State High Court 12 says he has “too many cases to deal with that are more important,” refusing to grant Tarfa and the children a trial. He urged the parties to settle outside of court, issuing a deadline of June 4, 2024, to “get back to him.”

The case of the Du Merci children dates back to 2019 when Nigerian officials raided the Christian orphanage on Christmas Day. Police officers from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) confiscated 29 children and moved them to government-run facilities. Professor Tarfa was detained and imprisoned on alleged charges of kidnapping and abduction.

While in government custody, authorities split the children up, including siblings, and forced them to recite Arabic, study Islam, and attend prayers in a mosque. Since the children had Christian names, authorities reassigned them Muslim names.

In June 2021, Tarfa went before the Kano High Court and was acquitted of his kidnapping and abduction charges. However, a day before the trial was over, the prosecution presented forgery charges in connection with Du Merci’s official registration document. Even though Professor Tarfa received the registration document from the government, the prosecution accused his document of being fake as it did not have a proper serial number. Professor Tarfa was found guilty and continued to stay in prison.

In April 2022, Tarfa appealed the forged document ruling, and almost a year later, the Court of Appeals discharged and acquitted Tarfa of all charges.

During the appeal trial, Professor Tarfa’s niece testified that many of the children who come to Du Merci are through Tarfa’s friend, a doctor who is asked to perform abortions. The doctor refers these women to Du Merci, who offers to take the children and allow the mother to reclaim custody later if she chooses to do so. The judge said this evidence proves Solomon Tarfa is a hero rather than a person worthy of punishment.

Now, Professor Tarfa wants the Nigerian government to be held accountable.

Tarfa has asked Kano State to pay reparations for his illegal imprisonment, false accusations, and the illegal confiscation of his children. The reparations would also cover the costs of rebuilding Du Merci Orphanage, which was demolished by the government, and the cost of rent for Professor Tarfa, his wife, and the released children, who had to relocate to an apartment.

Professor Tarfa continues to demand the release of 16 children who remain in government custody. ICC has documentation that these children continue to face mental and physical abuse, including burns and medical neglect.

The government refuses to pay Professor Tarfa for its wrongdoings, escalating the situation before the High Court 12 in Kano State. The judge’s latest decision is gravely disappointing, as it pushes the potential release of the 16 children to June, making it more than 4.5 years since the children were first placed in custody.

ICC continues to pray for the children wrongly held by the Nigerian government.

We pray that the authorities will recognize their wrongdoings, release the children, and repay Professor Tarfa and his wife the reparations they deserve.

Pray that the children will retain their Christian faith.

PAKISTAN: Gunman Kills Christian Youth

On February 5th, Sunil Masih and three other Christian youth were standing in a market of Punjab's Gujranwala District when six men arrived on motorcycles. One of the men shouted, "Kill all the Christians." At that point, a different man, Zaman Butt, opened fire, killing a 14-year-old boy named Sunil. During the attack, another Christian youth was grazed with a bullet. The assailants then fled the scene. Sunil was rushed to a local hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Apparently, the altercation began days prior when Zaman Butt, along with a group of intoxicated individuals, arrived at the local Christian colony and attempted to kidnap a boy named Sharoon. While this targeted victim was able to fend off his attackers, he was badly beaten.

The perpetrators are reportedly members of a pedophile criminal gang known for targeting followers of Jesus. According to a local pastor, the gang is well known to police, but their criminal activities have often been ignored. "Their vile depredations target the weak Christian community because authorities ignore our pleas for help," Pastor Asif lamented.

While a police report has been filed, and the identities of those involved in the incident are known, at last report, the perpetrators were still at large.
For more reports on the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, go to our country report.

Please prayerfully uphold the family members and friends of Sunil as they mourn the tragic loss of his young life, asking God to provide them greatly needed comfort and healing.

In the meantime, may His Holy Spirit also be actively working to transform the hearts and minds of those involved in this case, prompting the authorities to bring all members of the criminal gang to justice and ultimately hopeful repentance.

Further, ask our Heavenly Father to ensure divine protection, safety and peace are provided to the vulnerable members of this Christian community, as well as to the many other followers of Jesus whose lives are at risk in this South Asian country.

VIETNAM: Christian Sentenced for Leading Prayer Meetings

Nay Y Blang is a member of the Central Highlands Evangelical Church of Christ – a religious group that is not officially recognized by the Vietnamese Communist Party. In May 2023, the Christian leader was arrested and charged with taking advantage of "democratic freedom to infringe upon the interests of the state," as well as "the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and individuals." These accusations arose from the prayer meetings he had been holding in his home.

During the trial, at which there was no defence lawyer present, Nay admitted to hosting the prayer meetings. Yet, he did not agree with the accusatory claims that the gatherings were subversive towards the government. Pastor Aga, who started the church and now lives in the United States, insists that the organization is strictly religious. However, at the end of the trial on January 26th, Nay was sentenced to 54 months in prison.

This is not the first time that Nay has been convicted for his Christian activities. In April 2005, he was sentenced to more than five years in prison for allegedly "undermining the unity policy." In September 2022, the believer was also fined for "abusing democratic freedoms and belief freedoms."

While registered religious groups in Vietnam face restrictions, members of unregistered groups (such as those who attend Nay's church) encounter frequent harassment, abuse and criminal charges. The persecution of unregistered churches is particularly severe in rural areas and for members of ethnic minorities.
Additional information on the challenges experienced by Christians in Vietnam is available at our country report.

Pray that Nay will be encouraged and strengthened by the abiding presence of God's Spirit during his time in prison.

While waiting for release from custody, may he receive opportunities to reach others for Christ through the life-changing message of the Gospel.

Please also prayerfully remember the many other Christians in Vietnam who regularly encounter harassment from officials, asking the Lord to remind these persecuted believers of His unfailing love and sustaining promises.

According to an anonymous prayer letter received by ChinaAid, three Christians were arrested and detained on January 18th because they had led children from their church in singing hymns and prayer. The next day, police raided the homes of the three detained church members, who have been identified as Dai Chuanli, Wang Dandan and Ma Jiahui. Each of these believers was given a 15-day administrative detention.

This is the third time since September 2023 that members of the Fuyang Maizhong Reformed Church have been detained for their worship activities. Other believers from the church continue to face frequent harassment from community officials, who have pried open the doors of their homes and pressured landlords to evict Christian residents.

Administrative detentions are commonly used as a way of harassing and intimidating believers without having to lay charges against the individuals.
For other reports on the persecution of Chinese believers, go to our country report.

Please uphold the congregants of this government-harassed church in your prayers, along with the members of unregistered Christian communities throughout China.

May these oppressed believers receive wisdom and strength from the Lord, enabling them to not only endure the challenges they're facing, but also triumphantly overcome them.

And despite the overt opposition from Chinese Communist Party officials, may their children continue to be trained in the ways of God so they will likewise courageously serve Him.

TÜRKIYE (Turkey): Gunmen Attack Worship Service

Santa Maria Catholic Church

On the morning of January 28th, two gunmen entered the Santa Maria Catholic Church in Istanbul, Türkiye. Wearing masks, the men walked into the church, shot into the air, and then killed one person. Security footage shows the gun apparently jamming just before the men left.

The victim has been identified as Tuncer Murat Cihan, a Muslim man who had been attending services for the past several weeks. The priest described him as "a good person." It is uncertain if he was specifically targeted by the attackers.

Authorities quickly detained two men: one from Tajikistan and the other from Russia. They are known to be affiliated with ISIS, a militant Islamic group that has since claimed responsibility for the attack. The perpetrators of the incident appear to have acted in response to a call from ISIS leaders to target Jews and Christians.

In response to the attack, church leaders in Türkiye are advising Christians to not succumb to fear. Ali Kalkandeen, who serves as president for the Association of Protestant Churches in Türkiye, reminded Turkish believers that "God has not given us a spirit of fear" (2 Timothy 1:7). He further encouraged them by saying: "Satan will never stop attacking Christians. Do not let this become a stumbling block in our relationship with God."
For other reports on the persecution of Christians in Türkiye, go to our country report.

Pray that God will encourage Christians in Türkiye to stand firm in the midst of ongoing oppression, providing them with His divine protection, as well as the wisdom, courage and strength they need to continue leading lives of resilient faith.

Pray also that many other people living in this Middle Eastern country will be drawn to the message of the Gospel through the testimonies of His people.

ERITREA: At Least 30 Arrested at a Birthday Gathering

Source: VOMC
Sources: Open Doors, Church in Chains

A birthday cake with a candle in the shape of the numeral "1" is in the foreground. A person in handcuffs is in the shadows.

On January 20th, 30 Christian adults, plus an unknown number of children, were arrested in Eritrea when police raided a party that was held in celebration of an infant's first birthday. The incident took place in the capital city of Asmara at the home of a Christian couple who was hosting a gathering of family and friends to celebrate the birthday of their firstborn child.

Police specifically targeted evangelical Christians at the event. Although authorities sent home those who were not, all adult male evangelicals had immediately been taken into custody. The evangelical women, many of whom happened to be mothers, were told to appear at the police station two days later. When these women arrived, they had also been taken into custody, along with some children who needed to accompany their mothers.

Dr. Berhane Asmelash, who presently serves as the director of Release Eritrea, states that there are now more Christians in Eritrea than ever before in the country's history. "Twenty years ago, the number of evangelicals was very small, but now it has multiplied several times because the Gospel can never be in chains," he explains. "Christians cannot stop worshipping because their hearts will not allow them to stop. They meet for Bible study and prayer despite the risk of arrest because they are in love with their Lord."
To learn more about the country of Eritrea, and/or read additional reports addressing the suffering of Christians in this East African nation, go to our country report.

Please prayerfully uphold the Eritrean Christians who were recently arrested at the birthday gathering because of their faith in Christ, asking the Lord to mediate on their behalf.

While waiting for their hopeful soon release from custody, may these believers – including their accompanying children – experience His perfect peace, as well as greatly needed comfort and strength.

Specifically pray that as the children grow to maturity, they will acquire a full understanding of the spiritual freedom that's available to all who trust in Jesus.

Also continue to remember the many other believers throughout Eritrea who are currently being held without charge, asking that they too will receive needed courage, hope and endurance from the abiding presence of our loving Heavenly Father who promises to never leave them nor forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6)

PAKISTAN: Two Christian Brothers Forcibly Converted

Source: VOMC
Sources: Morning Star News, Anglican Ink, Pakistan Christian Post, LICAS

Two men are silhouetted against the outline of a mosque.

Two Christian brothers, Azam and Nadeem George Masih, were reportedly kidnapped on January 22nd before being beaten and forced to recite an Islamic conversion creed. The assailants recorded a video statement in which the brothers were forced to state that they had converted to Islam of their own free will.

Azam had been working at his tailor shop in the Sialkot District of Punjab when he was taken by gunpoint to the home of one of the suspects and subsequently beaten. The attackers later abducted his younger brother Nadeem, whom they also tortured before forcing both Christians to recite the fundamental beliefs of Islam as statements of their conversions. After stealing the victims' mobile phones and other belongings, then threatening to kill them if they disclosed the incident to anyone, the perpetrators released the two Christians. The victimized brothers have since received medical treatment for their injuries.

While such incidents of persecution are frequently overlooked by the authorities, police are investigating the attack and have taken two suspects, Qaseem Shah and Sunny Shah, into custody. Both perpetrators possessed previous criminal backgrounds and were also known for inciting hatred against Christians.

Despite pleas from governmental leaders for peace, tensions remain high for Christians in the area. Azam and Nadeem have reportedly gone into hiding and cut off all communication due to fear of retribution from militant Muslim community members. Additional prayer alert reports on the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, including videotaped podcasts/segments, are available at our country report.

Pray for God to minister needed physical, spiritual and emotional healing to Azam and Nadeem, as they now seek refuge and safety in the aftermath of the attacks.

May truth and justice prevail in each of their cases, and may those responsible for the attacks against these Christian brothers be held accountable for their violent actions.

Furthermore, pray that the Lord will work deeply within the hearts and minds of Pakistan's governing officials – and, as a result, change the wrongful mindsets of others in the country who want to inflict harm on followers of Jesus, so that incidents of persecution would not be tolerated in the future.

Mexico - Bold Witness Beaten 40 Times

Jan. 25, 2024
Source: iCommitToPray

Gabriela lives in a rural village in Oaxaca, Mexico, where members of her Mixteca community adhere to Christo-paganism, a syncretistic blend of pagan practices and Roman Catholicism that is opposed to the gospel. Because of her boldness in sharing her faith, she has been attacked by her neighbors as well as her husband, who is embarrassed by her commitment to Christ. She has been beaten an estimated 40 times and hospitalized on several occasions. Despite this opposition, she continues to make outreach trips into the Mixteca regions of the mountains of Oaxaca to spread the gospel where few others can go.

Pray for Gabriela's protection, including from her neighbors and her own husband, as she boldly spreads the gospel of Christ and that she would feel God's love and blessing in her life.

Pray that many would put their faith in Christ, including her husband and neighbors, as she continues boldly sharing her faith.

Other Prayer requests for Mexico:

Pray for towns in Chiapas, where violence and civil unrest hinder church attendance.

Pray for the protection of workers in areas of Marxist influence in southern Mexico.

Pray for those losing land, housing, community and family for following the Lord.

Pray for local leaders who enforce laws under which pastors and church leaders can be imprisoned.

Mecca

 Home to Islam's holiest site!

Pray for:

  • spiritual pilgrims to encounter Jesus and become His followers
  • persecution to strengthen, unify, and expand the underground church in Mecca
  • zealous Muslim leaders to be transformed into passionate followers of Jesus

LAHOREPakistan (Christian Daily InternationalMorning Star News) – An Islamist cleric presided over the forced conversion of two Christians in Sialkot District, Pakistan after they were tortured into reciting the Islamic conversion creed, sources said.

Azam Masih, 28, and his brother, Nadeem Masih, were abducted, beaten with iron rods and pressured to convert to Islam on Jan. 22 in the Kotli Loharan area, said Adil Ghauri, chairman of the Masihi Baidari Tehreek or Movement for Christian Awakening.

Azam Masih was working at his tailoring shop in the Kharota Syedan market when Naseem Shah and accomplices held him at gunpoint and forcibly took him to the house of another suspect, Sunny Shah, Ghauri said.

“The assailants accused Azam of patronizing ‘wrongdoings’ in the area and started beating him with iron rods,” Ghauri told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News, adding that the suspects later abducted his younger brother, brought him to the house and subjected him to the same torture. “The accused then forced the two Christians to recite the Kalima [proclamation of Islamic conversion] if they wanted to save their lives, threatening to kill them if they refused. The tortured brothers had no choice but to surrender to this demand.”

The suspects also recorded a video statement of the two brothers in which they were forced to say that they were converting to Islam of their own free will, Ghauri said. He added that the assailants also snatched mobile phones and other belongings from the two brothers before releasing them.

The rights activist said the brothers and their impoverished Christian family chose to keep silent about the ordeal, as the suspects had warned them against contacting police.

“We came to know about this incident on Jan. 24 and immediately contacted the family,” Ghauri said. “After much persuasion, we were able to convince the family to file a First Information Report [FIR] with the police, as keeping silent would have only encouraged the perpetrators to target more Christians living in the village.”

More than 300 Christian families are settled there, he added.

Kotli Loharan police arrested a Muslim cleric alleged to have conducted the conversion and registered charges against the suspects of kidnapping, punishable by death or life imprisonment; theft with intention to cause injury or death, punishable by up to 10 years in prison; threatening death or grievous injury, punishable by up to seven years in prison; causing injury to extort a confession, punishable by up to 10 years in prison; and acts committed by several persons in furtherance of common intention.

The suspects, Naseem Shah and Sunny Shah, have criminal backgrounds and have been involved in inciting hatred against Christians, Ghauri said.

Local Christian leaders were engaged with Muslim scholars and government officials to maintain peace in the village, he said, but the two brothers and their family have gone into hiding – and cut off contact with those who are trying to provide them legal help, he said.

“The family has cut off all contact due to fear of reprisal by the accused Muslims,” Ghauri said. “We are trying to find them, because their statements are crucial to ensure prosecution of the accused.”

The attack was evidence that forced conversions were taking place in Pakistan under various pretexts, he said.

Pray for Azam Masih, 28, and his brother, Nadeem Masih, and their families,  that they will remain faithful to God and safe from further harm by the Muslim community.

Pray for wisdom, as they have gone into hiding, but this could encourage further persecution against Christians in this area.

Pray that God would provide for them as this must have interrupted their means of income.

A Christian couple in Uppaladinni, Karnataka, was recently beaten for their faith and threatened with death if they continued to practise Christianity. The attack on Vijayalakshmi Chavhan and her husband Ashok happened on January 10th, the day after Vijayalakshmi was accused by several media organizations of conducting forced religious conversions.

Vijayalakshmi is a registered healthcare worker who goes door to door raising awareness of basic medical needs. Some villagers, however, objected to a Christian being allowed to enter their homes. Her opponents threatened to get her fired and conveyed warnings of violence.

After the conversion allegations circulated, Christians in the area intervened on Vijayalakshmi's behalf, filing a complaint with the police. However, when the Christian woman, her husband and some of the villagers met with police to resolve the situation, a mob of around 300 people arrived and attacked the married couple. While police officers attempted to intervene, sources report that they did not do enough to prevent the attack.

A police investigation has since been launched, with six men named as perpetrators of the incident. However, harassment continues for this couple, as well as the members of their church. For instance, three Christian families recently had their utilities disconnected for four days on the instruction of the community chief. These believers have also received threats and warnings to stop following Jesus.
For other reports addressing the persecution encountered by Christians in India, go to our country report.

Pray for the protection of Vijayalakshmi, Ashok and other believers living in this community who are presently facing intimidation and threats because of their faith in Christ.

May those responsible for this attack not only be held accountable for their violent actions, but may they also come to realize the error of their ways.

Ultimately, pray that God would radically transform the hearts of those throughout India who are opposing the Gospel message, leading multitudes more to faith in the Lord for their eternal salvation and the provision of their numerous other needs.

In recent years, efforts by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to control all areas of society has increased exponentially. On October 24th, the national legislature passed a "Patriotic Education Law" which took effect on January 1st. The purpose of this law is clear: to ensure that the philosophies and principles of the CCP permeate every facet of society.

After implementing the law, CCP officials met with leaders of the country's five authorized state religions to explain how to adhere to the new policies. The guidelines given to these religious leaders state that China's "religious circles must learn, think and practise 'Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.'" Of critical importance is the statement that "the state is greater than religion, and the state law is greater than religious rules." The intention is for education on all levels to be affected, including that of schools, religious centres, company training programs, and every other area of society. The policies further emphasize that the law applies to all Chinese people, whether they are living in mainland China, Taiwan, or anywhere else in the world.

The effect that this law will have on churches in China is not yet fully known, but increased persecution is anticipated. Within the state church, pressure to promote socialist ideologies over Biblical principles will undoubtedly increase. The law may also be used as a tool to further persecute unregistered churches throughout the country.
To learn more about the persecution of Christians in China, go to our country report.

Please remember all Chinese Christians in your prayers, even those residing in other countries, as they face increasing pressures to centre their lives around the beliefs of President Xi Jinping.

Pray that these believers will receive wisdom as they determine the best way to stand firm in their faith while dealing with governmental indoctrination, which so strongly opposes the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Pray that President Xi, and other leaders within the Chinese Communist Party, would come to terms with the truth of God's Word so they too will reach the point of humble repentance and salvation.

SRI LANKA: Church Ordered to Find New Location

A congregation and a group at the front are worshipping the Lord together, many with their hands raised.

On the morning of December 3rd, police entered the Assembly of God church in the town of Makola, which is located near the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. The officer in charge questioned whether the service was being conducted legally. Since the believers were in the middle of a worship service, the pastor agreed to report to the police station the next morning.

The next day, police questioned the pastor and his landlord. Although the church leader was told to stop holding church services in his rental home, he refused to comply. One of the officers then stated that the place of worship needed to be registered with the government in order to continue operating. The police also ordered the landlord to no longer allow the pastor to use the house for hosting Christian gatherings.

The pastor has been given six months to vacate the premises. He also signed a police statement asserting that he will continue hosting worship services during that time. The church is having difficulties finding another location for a couple reasons: 1) since there are more than 100 people regularly attending the services, they will need a sizeable space, and 2) some landlords in the area are not willing to let the believers use their facilities as a meeting place for the church.
More reports on the challenges facing our Christian brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka are available at our country report.

Pray that the members of this church will be able to find a suitable meeting facility where they can worship together peacefully without any further opposition.

In the meantime, may their Godly lives and daily interactions with those around them serve as testimonies of God's love, grace and peace.

As the Holy Spirit works in and through the situation – and within the hearts of the opposing authorities – may all the barriers that have been raised in this South Asian nation be removed, so these Christians and many others can faithfully and freely spread the hope of the Gospel.
